The Kolumn: Issue #05

A few days ago I was watching T.V. with my family. As I was channel surfing, I happened upon the film “The Cable Guy”. The big Jim Carrey fan that I am, I had to watch the movie, I hadn’t seen it in years. There came to this part towards the beginning of the film where Jim Carrey brings Matthew Broderick to the big satellite. Carrey describes the future of T.V. as thus…

“The future is now! Soon every American home will integrate their television, phone and computer. You’ll be able to visit the Louvre on one channel, or watch female wrestling on another. You can do your shopping at home, or play Mortal Kombat with a friend from Vietnam. There’s no end to the possibilities!!”

I had totally forgot the mention of Mortal Kombat in the movie. And to know that when the fourth quarter of 2004 comes around us and the next installment of the Mortal Kombat franchise, tentatively titled Mortal Kombat VI, we finally can play Mortal Kombat against a friend from Vietnam.

The big discussion lately has been the talk of MK VI supporting online playability. What do I think of this? I couldn’t be happier for the Mortal Kombat franchise. This is a big step for Midway and the Mortal Kombatants who support MK till death do us part.

Although my PS2 is not online yet, I still look forward to online capability for MK VI. I have played online at one of my friends house, I can say that it’s not excellent, but it’s none the less good. I figure, by the year 2006/2007, almost all serious gamers will have an online feature for their platforms, be it Xbox or PS2.

With MK VI being online, perhaps finally we can find out who’s the best Kombatant in the world! Look at the craze Diablo caused when it was online. Every PC gamer was going nuts over the game. Imagine if Mortal Kombat VI did that for the platforms. If it Created a huge craze and millions upon millions poured online to play against each other.

Nobody knows yet if MK VI being online will be a great monument in the MK history, or a great downfall of our beloved franchise. But my guess, I believe MK can truly regain its popularity it once had when MK2 hit the arcades by being online playable.

We shall just wait and see what the future brings us. I will report again on this when more information becomes available.
