As we eagerly anticipate the first full-length trailer for the Mortal Kombat reboot, there are a lot of rumblings going around that Warner Bros. has very ambitious plans for our beloved franchise. These plans reportedly revolve around the creation of an entire cinematic universe.
It’s becoming very apparent that Warner is all-in on expanding as many of their big name IPs as possible for HBO Max. While this would obviously all be contingent if Mortal Kombat performs well with critics, fans, and results in both positive streams and even some box office returns – this is a very positive sign that Warner is doing what it can to invest in the franchise. Unfortunately there’s not a lot of other details yet, beyond “it’s in the plans”, but the fact that we could have numerous live-action sequels and/or spinoffs, or a Mandalorian type series, and even animated features has me foaming at the mouth.
This is the most promising Mortal Kombat has looked in regards to a cinematic universe since 1995. Here’s hoping Mortal Kombat kicks butt and delivers for everyone who has stakes in the franchise, so we can see this potential cinematic universe come to fruition!
