Cole Young is totally Johnny Cage in the new Mortal Kombat movie. Right? Okay, so bear with me here on this wacky theory. There’s been a lot of speculation on who Cole Young really is in the highly anticipated Mortal Kombat movie. Reddit users are claiming he’s the often forgotten about hidden character, Chameleon, and really an Earthrealm sleeper agent for Shao Kahn. While this would be a nice twist to the character, mind you, I don’t think they would have the movie’s centerpiece character and audience surrogate be one of the most obscure hidden characters in the franchise.
There are a lot of other solid theories. A good one is that he is the second Sub-Zero, Kuai Liang, and his name is just “Americanized”. Another theory is that he is a new version of Scorpion, this is based on some images from the trailer. Or… Cole Young could just be Cole Young. A new character that acts as a vehicle for the audience to learn the lore of Mortal Kombat.
My official theory: Cole Young is totally Johnny Cage.
And here’s why:
If it’s not Ryan Reynolds or Scott Adkins…
There’s been a longstanding “joke” amongst the movie producers that they’re waiting for Ryan Reynolds or Scott Adkins to portray Johnny Cage, and couldn’t get either committed for this movie. This totally could be true, and heck, we might even see a surprise at the end of the movie with one those two actors cameoing as the character to setup a possible sequel or spin-off. However, I feel this is likely an inside joke to throw fans off the true scent. Ask yourself, how can they not include perhaps the third most popular character in the franchise? He has to be here somewhere…
There was a rumor originally that Lewis Tan WAS Johnny Cage
The original rumor was that when Lewis Tan was cast and his role wasn’t yet specified, most fans assumed he would be Johnny Cage. So, there was some initial momentum to this theory when the movie was first being planned.
Johnny Cage is most likely his stage name
Cole Young can be his real birth name, while Johnny Cage is his screen or stage name. Vin Diesel wasn’t born Vin Diesel, his birth name is Mark Sinclair after all. But the story is there: failed martial arts actor and now struggling MMA fighter. This would give him the proper “Hollywood” backstory while also acknowledging his martial arts skills and association with the tournament. Plus they can set up a cheesy explanation for his “stage name” – since, you see, he fights in a cage…. something…. something… something.
What’s the over-under of when this character is introduced we get a Dark Knight Rises moment: “Uh, try my legal name. You should use your full name. I like that name. Robin.” Just replace legal with screen and Robin with Johnny Cage. Boom.
Lewis Tan looks like a Hollywood Actor
Lewis Tan is the most “Hollywood-looking” cast member. He’s a great looking guy. Charismatic. Good actor. If Scott Adkins or Ryan Reynolds are not really in line to portray this character, honestly, Lewis Tan would be the next one on my list. Seriously. He’s a very, very good choice for this role and has a certain presence of a Hollywood leading man so to speak.
The “Goro Giveaway”
The Goro vs. Cole Young snippet from the trailer. I mean… come on guys.
Cole’s dressed in Johnny Cage’s MK1 gear. That is Cole Young right? Johnny Cage vs. Goro has a deep history in the lore of the franchise – so this is all almost too much of a giveaway – but we’ll see.
The Chosen One
It’s established in Mortal Kombat X that Johnny is “the chosen one” when he defeats Shinnok. It’s not too crazy to think that they would introduce “Cole Young” early on in this film franchise as the chosen one or main protagonist. Plus, this still all allows him to be a surrogate for the audience.
Johnny is often the franchise’s number one source for comic relief. While Lewis Tan certainly has the comedic timing for this, he appears to portray the Cole Young character very tormented and serious from the trailer. That’s not to say he won’t suddenly become a wise-cracking jokester in the movie – but even so, it’s obvious Kano portrayed by Josh Lawson will clearly be the source for comic relief in this movie. And rightfully so, given Lawson’s comedic chops. So Johnny Cage being a goofball is probably not all needed here in all honesty.
Johnny HAS to be in the movie somewhere right?
Again, why DELIBERATELY omit one of the franchise’s most recognizable and popular characters? Either Cole Young is totally Johnny Cage, or Johnny is cameoing at the end of the movie. No doubt about it.
What do you guys think?
